The report type decides everything

Pick the wrong report type and no amount of filtering will show the records you need. Learn to read 'Accounts with or without Contacts' before you build anything.

Dashboards answer questions

Every widget should answer one question a real person actually asks. If you cannot name the person and the question, delete the widget.
